C. Jean Ryan is Of Counsel in Buchalter’s San Francisco office and a member of the Tax, Benefits and Estate Planning practice group. Ms. Ryan concentrates her practice on general tax matters, which include tax planning for businesses, as well as tax and estate planning for high net worth individuals.

With over four decades of experience, Ms. Ryan has a broad tax practice with many areas of expertise. She counsels her clients on corporate, partnership, individual, real estate, gift and estate taxation, with a specialization in advising families and closely-held businesses. Her clients include U.S. and non-U.S. based families in connection with tax and estate planning, and she is frequently involved in business succession planning.

Ms. Ryan has also represented foreign governments and individual foreign investors in connection with their U.S. investments, venture capital partnerships, real estate investment trusts, real estate management companies, and individuals and closely-held entities involved in a wide variety of domestic and international activities.

Ms. Ryan has additional expertise in representing non-profit organizations, including private foundations, public charities and private operating foundations formed by individuals and corporations. She also frequently speaks on tax and estate planning issues to local professional groups.

Ms. Ryan has been selected by Best Lawyers in America every year from 2007-2025. She was selected as a Northern California Super Lawyer from 2005-2015, and was listed in Best Lawyers in the Bay Area, Bay Area Magazine in 2005

Ms. Ryan earned her J.D. from University of California, Los Angeles, graduating Order of the Coif, where she was a member of the UCLA Law Review. She earned her LL.M. in Taxation from Golden Gate University, and her B.A. magna cum Laude from the University of California, Los Angeles.
