Ernest (Ernie) G. Bootsma is a Shareholder in Buchalter’s Portland office and a member of the Firm’s Corporate and Intellectual Property practice groups. Mr. Bootsma represents start-up and growth stage businesses, as well as more mature companies. His practice encompasses entity formation, financing, corporate governance, mergers and acquisitions, IP due diligence, intellectual property (copyrights trademarks, and licensing), franchising law, and transactional fields.

Mr. Bootsma has negotiated and closed complex merger and acquisition transactions, planned and counseled clients with regard to intellectual property protection and maintenance, provided internet/e-commerce, domain name, website, entertainment, media and advertising counseling and copyright advice, structured and implemented licensing and distribution arrangements, and handled debt and equity financing transactions for clients in a wide variety of industries. Mr. Bootsma also counsels physicians and physician practice groups in a wide variety of business structural issues in response to state and federal legislation. Additionally, he has frequently acted as general counsel to a number of emerging growth start-ups and venture funds through successive rounds of financing.

Mr. Bootsma has been involved with the Oregon Entrepreneurs Network for more than 15 years, having served as the Chair of Angel Oregon 2013, Chair of the Pubtalk Committee, and served as a member of the Membership Committee. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Oregon Technology Business Center in Beaverton, Oregon, and currently serves as Chair of the Advisory Board for the Oregon State University Advantage Accelerator.

Mr. Bootsma has been selected as an Oregon Super Lawyer and received a listing in Best Lawyers several times, and has a Martindale-Hubbell peer rating of AV Preeminent 5.0 out of 5.

Mr. Bootsma earned his J.D., cum laude, from Willamette University College of Law in 1990, and earned his B.S., High Honors, in Art & Graphic Design from Oregon State University in 1986.
