In late August, a jury in Hill v. Ford Motor Co., heard by the State Court of Gwinnett County, Georgia, returned a $1.7 billion verdict against Ford Motor Co. in a case brought by the family of an elderly couple who died when their F-250 pickup’s roof collapsed during a rollover accident.
This verdict, the largest in state history, stands out in particular because it wasn’t awarded in a class action brought by a large group of plaintiffs, but in response to a single event involving two individuals — though it did relate to a larger issue of negligence by the company.
